Drive Wines was started by John Musto and Tom Young. Aspiring winemakers who honed their craft in the vineyards, wineries, and classrooms of Sonoma County. Inspired by their surroundings, they craft single vineyard wines through passion and grit.
In 2015, John and Tom met at Santa Rosa Junior College’s wine studies program studying Viticulture and Enology. That fall, they made a barrel of Zinfandel from Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley in Tom’s garage. That first wine would go on to win a Silver Medal in the Sonoma County Harvest fair and a passion was born!
Tom and John would reach an arrangement with vineyard owner Pete Lewis; in exchange for vineyard upkeep, they would retain all harvested grapes and use Pete’s garage for production. The garage, which was used to restore vintage racing cars, would become a major source of inspiration and “Drive Wines” was born. The wines they made in the garage would go on to win multiple gold and silver medals in amateur competitions.
After several harvests together, John and Tom were ready to launch Drive as a professional winery. In 2017, Drive produced a Zinfandel from Puccioni Ranch in Dry Creek Valley and in 2018 a single vineyard Rosé of Zinfandel from Comstock Vineyard, also in Dry Creek Valley. The wines were released in the spring of 2019 to critical and consumer acclaim. Drive continues to hone their craft, focusing on extraordinary vineyards throughout Sonoma County.
Originally from the East Coast, John Musto moved from Boston to Italy where he caught the wine bug. Returning stateside, he relocated to Sonoma County in 2013 to pursue a career in the wine industry. John manages winemaking for Drive Wines while working full-time at Ridge Vineyards and pursuing a degree in Enology from Santa Rosa Junior College. John resides in Petaluma and spends his free time hiking, traveling and cooking.
A lifelong North Bay resident, Tom Young recently retired from a career in the Printing/Graphic Arts business. Taking an interest in improving his home vineyard, Tom earned a degree in Viticulture from Santa Rosa Junior College. He currently manages vineyard operations and the day to day tasks to keep Drive Wines on the right track. Tom resides in Penngrove spending his free time traveling, gardening, hiking and biking.
